Caught in the clutches of a brigand posing as ruler of Satis, kingdom of the Humans, Deirdre is not only separated from the acrobat troupe that raised her, but also from her sister Daphne, the only family she has ever known. Taken from a familiar, comfortable life of traveling and entertaining, Deirdre is thrust into the slave empire of the Grapevine and forced to fight or be sold. Where circumstance has placed her she finds she can no longer stick to the path of "minding her own business" and must choose the survival and freedom not only of herself but of her cellmates, the oppressed and starving people, and inevitably the kingdom she abandoned. But how can she do that while trapped inside the towering walls of Crow Haven? And who among the beaten and cowering slaves would dare to oppose Berglund and help her?
Deirdre is the second book in the Annals of Orbis, following the sister of Daphne (read Adrastea, book 1 in the Annals of Orbis) who is imprisoned in Crow Haven, and Miguel, the youngest Pavia brother who is tasked with the infiltration of the Grapevine and the less daunting, but far more infuriating task of preserving Deirdre's life.
