The Inheritance follows Elara Voss, an ordinary young woman whose life changes when she unexpectedly inherits Ashwood Hall, a mysterious estate in the isolated village of Hollowmere, from her estranged great-aunt Margaret Ashwood. Elara had met Margaret only once as a child and knows almost nothing about her family.
When Elara arrives at the estate, she encounters the suspicious Ashwood family, including Julian, Margaret's great-nephew, and Constance, her niece. The family is furious that a stranger has inherited everything. Soon, Elara discovers that Margaret's house is filled with secrets, including a locked sewing room covered with family documents, photographs, red thread, and evidence concerning Robert Ashwood, a young man who supposedly drowned thirty years earlier.
Margaret's letters reveal that Robert may never have died. He had secretly contacted Margaret for years, warning her that someone in the family knew the truth about his disappearance. Elara begins investigating with the help of Julian and Reeve, the groundskeeper, who later suspects that Robert may have been his father.
The truth gradually emerges: Robert had discovered that the Ashwood family had committed serious financial fraud. Edmund Whitlock, the family solicitor, had helped conceal the fraud decades earlier. Robert disappeared after learning the truth and eventually returned secretly to Ashwood Hall shortly before his death.
However, Whitlock is not the person stalking Elara. The real threat is Nathaniel Reyes, Constance's son. He discovered that Robert had returned and feared that Robert's survival would expose the family's secrets and threaten his inheritance. Nathaniel murdered Robert and then tried to frighten Elara away from investigating the estate. When confronted, he admits that he killed Robert to protect what he believed belonged to his family.
Nathaniel is arrested, while Whitlock confesses his role in the old financial fraud. Constance is forced to confront the consequences
