Ava Wilson just began her first day of work experience at a children's home, which turns out not to be a children's home exactly and the manager reveals the real reason he hired her, all before the windows and doors are blown inwards by an unknown enemy. As Ava gets sucked into this new world that nearly kills her, and still could if she's not careful, she has to learn to deal with lose, betrayal and maybe even love.

But when he shows up at her house one day, she can’t resist going back to work – despite the danger. Caught in a whirlwind of violence, lies and the mysterious symbols that the Conspiracy are desperate for, Maya finds herself somewhere unexpected and her loyalties tested. With the Conspiracy closing in and the hunt for the symbols intensifying it becomes more and more difficult to hold onto both her life and her sanity – and she’s not the only one struggling. After so many failed attempts by others, can she stop Kairo from making a terrible mistake that could unleash the dead while dealing with her own morality?

Grey has almost run out of options. He has tried everything, from giving her rewards to just plain forcing Haven to go to school, to learn about the different symbols. But Haven wants to be independent and would rather do anything but learn about stupid symbols. Ever since she was a child it was her dream to receive the eye symbol and go into politics, where she would abolish the symbols for good and create a new Community. But that dream shatters when she receives the most unwanted symbol on her 17th birthday. And the only way for her to stay alive is to go into hiding. But will she be safe, by not speaking up?
