Plot Twist:
Yvaine is shielding Vaugh from the truth that he contributed to it, not only hiding her trauma.
Years before they ever connected, Vaugh's strong, corrupt father was the guy who facilitated Yvaine's brother's abuse. He paid him to keep quiet about particular crimes the family was engaged in, and in return her brother obtained immunity.
Yvaine never told Vaugh, but after she wed him she found the link. Why?
Because Vaugh despised his father, left the family business, and vowed never to be like him. Telling him now would ruin him-or worse, drive him to want vengeance in ways that would destroy all they had constructed.
Her brother returns, so he not only threatens her bodily. He threatens to tell Vaugh the truth-that his own bloodline is tied to Yvaine's suffering.
Just as Vaugh starts to doubt she is not cheating but rather concealing something far more sinister...
He finds proof connecting his father's offshore accounts to hush money Yvaine's sibling received.
Vaugh must now answer the terrible question:
For the crimes of his own family, has he been punishing the one lady he loves?
And the deeper turn?
Yvaine had begun arranging to depart not because she wanted to but rather because she felt Vaugh merited a life unmarred by her history. Her quiet sacrifice would have destroyed them both... until Vaugh finally chooses to face the truth, not run from it.
