The Reaper Invasion might have been defeated, but it was not without sacrifice. The galaxy is in ruins and with the destruction of the Mass Relay network, the restoration process is near impossible. Luckily, the brightest minds of the galaxy had been stranded on Earth and they have been working tirelessly repairing the Charon relay. The Council will need people to scout the galaxy and help restore what was lost, and the man they need most, who was thought to have been killed at the end of the Reaper war, has resurfaced.

Akuze taught him how to survive. The Reapers will decide what survival costs. Nektarios Shepard should have died on Akuze. Fifty Alliance marines went beneath the planet's surface. One came back. Six years later, the military has polished the massacre into a legend and placed its survivor aboard the SSV Normandy-a prototype warship built through an uneasy partnership with the turians. If the mission succeeds, Nektarios could become humanity's first Spectre. Eden Prime should be a routine shakedown. Instead, an ancient beacon forces a vision into Nektarios' mind: worlds burning, machines descending and every civilisation in the galaxy being systematically erased. The Citadel Council calls it trauma. Rogue Spectre Saren Arterius calls submission survival. Hunting Saren forces Nektarios to place his life in the hands of strangers: a turian investigator suffocating beneath procedure, a young quarian carrying evidence no one else survived to recover, a krogan mercenary with no reason to trust humanity and an asari archaeologist whose mother stands beside the enemy. But Cerberus keeps appearing at the edges of the investigation-and the deeper Nektarios digs, the more he suspects Akuze was never the accident the Alliance declared it to be. He survived the first grave. The next is large enough for every species in the galaxy.

The Reaper War is over, but the galaxy is far from peaceful. Refusing to believe that her husband has been lost, Tali teams up with old friends to search for Shepard and bring him home. The galaxy is recovering in the wake of the Reaper war - nearly a year has passed and Commander Shepard awakens to a universe changed and teetering on the brink of uncertainty. Old friends have drifted and alliances are being redrawn. Can he find hope amidst the rubble or will everything that he built be crushed in another war?
