Tanka Stories

Itoshii: A Tanka Collection began with an old Japanese word, "itoshii", meaning "beloved" or "darling." From that, grew a collection of tanka poems in its many forms - devotion, heartbreak, the slow return to yourself, and the realities. Moreover, tanka poetry is spare by nature. Five lines, and a handful of syllables. Therefore, that restraint felt right within this subject, since love rarely announces itself loudly.

𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐦𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲. 𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐛𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬, 𝐨𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐱𝐢𝐞𝐭𝐲. A poetic sanctuary where contradictions find harmony-a delicate interplay of sorrow and joy, chaos and stillness. Each verse is a whisper in the quiet dome, a gentle unraveling of emotions that exist in paradox. It is a refuge for the restless, a solace for those who find peace unsettling and turbulence oddly comforting. Through intricate words, we explore the profound beauty of a mind both burdened and freed, embracing the weight of existence with a tranquil heart. In these pages, we feel not just an absence of turmoil but a delicate balance between feeling everything and nothing at all. Works that describe a sad soul-filled with joy. 1st Grace Awards, 1st Winter Rose Awards 2019 (Summer) 2nd Nexus Easter 2019 Nominations Award. What does 'tilting to the west' mean? It is the moment we cease to stand upright in who we are, even for a moment, a piece of ourselves for a day.. . a year . . . a lifetime. How? Perhaps a critical comment, gridlock on a life decision, an accident that shrouds you in mists of negativity, the ending of a relationship. No? It might be the death of a dream, personal isolation until you feel glacial; missing home or Mom. Many are battling in the war zone of chronic illness or disability until they don't remember 'Normal' or what 'Me' means. Others struggle to adapt to new roles, positions, or homes; Millions are mourning the emptiness-crater a person's absence has created in their daily lives. The poems within show "tilting" in its various forms, both literal and figurative. This collection includes poetry ranging from free verse to modern Japanese traditions (all written in English) including haiku, senryu, tanka, rengay, and haibun.
