John, a Scot, works with his father in a tannery in Castle Douglas, Dumfriesshire. When his father dies, deeply in debt, he leaves the town and his romantic interest, Mary, who is being pursued by an unwelcome suitor. He takes a job as a policeman amongst the poor, yet proud, people of pre-War II Newcastle, Tyneside. Here, he faces strife, hostility and then finally acceptance and a kind of love. Haunted by memories of his first love, however, he volunteers to fight at Alamein where he injured and sent to a hospital in the South of England. Here, he meets Odette with whom he starts a business that utilizes his old, tannery skills. Yet, despite his success, John still pines, for Mary and his beloved Scotland.
