We've all had crappy, poor paying or dangerous jobs in our youth. For me, by far, the most interesting one was being a cab driver during my college years. In this article, I paint a picture of what it was like to drive a cab in Buffalo, NY in the 70s, before debit cards, GPS, even AC. Of course, conversation with a diverse set of riders was almost always fun.

"Excuse me, mister, but why did everything suddenly turn black and white?" A miserable adult who prefers to ignore everything, including their dying father. A concerned neighbor/friend/something more with curious connections. A taxi driver who doesn't bother to ask where the passenger wants to go. And a cat with unclear intentions. Afin de mettre en place un monde en paix, sans guerres ni violences aucune, la plupart des dirigeants des pays de notre planète se sont mis d'accord afin d'établir un dispositif commun visant à établir durablement une certaine paix. Ce dispositif se présente sous la forme d'une montre que l'on met au poignet droit de toutes les personnes à partir de leurs 10 ans. Cette montre nommé « Charity Watch » est doté d'un dispositif électronique très complexe, perçoit toutes vos actions, tout ce que vous faites, qu'elles soient bonnes ou mauvaises. Ainsi, une bonne action entraînera un gain de point, qui s'affichera sur la montre, et au contraire, une mauvaise action retirera des points. Le gain et la perte de point variant selon la bonne ou la mauvaise action. Ces points servent à diverses choses dans un but pratique, dans la vie de tous les jours. En échange de ces points, une personne peut avoir accès à un large panel de divers services tel que des réductions en faisant ses courses, communiquer à moindre coût, consulter gratuitement un médecin, payer sa place de métro, voire même des réductions d'impôts et tout un tas d'autres applications imaginables au quotidien. Tout ceci dans le but évident de pousser la population à avoir un bon comportement les uns envers les autres. Mais, et c'est tout l'intérêt de cette histoire, ce dispositif présente des défauts, de très gros défauts.

A short dystopian story located in Taiwan. Imagine everything came at a price. Even to the point of paying for transport but not with money, no that would be too easy. To ride, you've got to kiss and your kiss will determine how much it will cost, whether you will get any benefits or not. If you refuse, you will be stranded with no transport, having to queue up again. Worse punishments await. Author notes: I was inspired by a sign I saw in Kaohsiung train station when I was travelling around Taiwan which is how this story came along. The sign has a totally different meaning but it's a funner way to interpret it.
