Anna is a 16 year old nerd. She is depressed and lonely and constantly gets teased. Everything changes when she meets a new guy, Ryan. Follow Anna on her journey on this rollercoaster we call life.

"It's not that I'm a mute. I just refuse to talk." Emma Harris is NOT a mute. She just refuses to talk. After witnessing painful and brutal things in her fifteen years of life, Emma has become traumatized. Domestic abuse, Rape, Murder, Torture: she has seen it all. And every time she's witnessed such horrific moments, she's always told the same thing: 'Tell anyone and you'll be next.' For that reason, she had decided to just not speak at all for the rest of her life. But..what if the new kids on the block can get her to break free of her condition. What if someone can help her learn to speak again? What if that person happens to be the boy next door?

Gretchen's mom has invited her over to California and now she goes off to visit her. She really doesn't even know her too well since her parents are divorced and she was always with her dad but as she spends more and more time with her she realizes her mother isn't bad at all. She faces new experiences and new emotions that bring up one word, love. Does she find out what it means to be in love? Does she even realize she is already in love?!

She lives at home in a run down house with her mother and her father. Her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago and they are now living on government support. Her father is abusive and works as a garbage man. Aside getting teased at school, things take a turn for the worse when her father turns to drugs. As she approaches her sixteenth birthday she longs more and more of a better life. So she vows to make a better life for herself and her mother. And that all starts with uncovering what is 'within'.
