Briar Shepherd is a 14-year old girl that attends James Madison Junior High. Being adopted by her two dads, Peter and Ross, and living with her adopted brother, Dexter, she learned from a very young age that the world can be quite harsh.
At the beginning of her eighth grade year, her and her best friends Chloe, Jordan, Bailey, Spencer, and Cooper are ready to take on their last year of middle school.
Halle, a wealthy, Catholic girl with a lot of secrets moves to Briar's town with her mother, father, and little brother. Briar instantly falls for her intelligent and bubbly personality. The two of them have a lot of chemistry, but Briar refuses to fully fall for Halle because she is too hung up on her long-term crush, Kendall. Besides, Halle insists that she is straight anyway.
After Kendall, Halle and a few other girls make fun of Briar in the change room for allegedly being a lesbian, Briar becomes distraught. Then, Briar confides in her father. Ross convinces her to start a GSA at her conservative school, so she can meet and bond with other people like her.
The next day, Briar, Chloe, and Jordan get approved to start James Madison Junior High's very first Gay/Straight Alliance club.
This club allows Briar to meet people like Tiago, a Latino, young, trans boy who desperately wants to start testosterone. Kate, an unapologetic feminist and lesbian who falls head over heels for Quinn, a shy bisexual girl who is just trying to figure everything out. Luke, a star basketball player and amputee who makes Briar's best friend and football teammate, Spencer, question his sexuality. Parker, a deaf boy who gives Bailey butterflies. Camila, an outgoing girl who helps Jordan discover more about his cynical self. And Charlie, a gay boy with a love for art who helps Chloe feel beautiful for the first time in her life.
