But even if you are not familiar with my art, surely you would know of my involvement in an affair known as the Black Child scandal. The whole affair cost me my reputation, my career, and my friends. Whatever the public might think, the truth is that the scandal was caused through no fault of my own. But I am not here to prove my innocence. No, I am here to document the lead-up to the scandal and my life hence. Because my career, my rise to fame, is as fascinating as it is controversial. And perhaps by understanding how I came to be you will also understand better the truth of this industry which inevitably led to my ruin. For even though it might seem that my fate as an idol was predestined, it was really the manipulation of grown-ups that set me onto this path. So let us go back to a hot afternoon some months after my ninth birthday, back to the day my destiny was irrevocably decided for me.

[Dal capitolo 15] «Ma hai sentito cosa cazzo mi ha detto?» mi chiede Shawn uscendo dalla piccola stazione di servizio. «Pensare che io...» sibila stringendo i denti per poi scuotere la testa e lasciare la frase a metà. «Dai Shawn, non ci pensare.» sospiro prendendo un'altro sorso di birra. «Torniamo al dormitorio, sono stan..» cerco di proporre ma sono costretta a serrare subito le labbra e lasciare la frase a metà quando sento un conato di vomito risalirmi fino alla bocca. «Io non sarò mai come quei coglioni, se lo mettessero bene in testa...» riprende a sputare amaro per poi aggiungere, a denti stretti, «Tutti quanti.» «Se vuoi quello che hanno loro devi essere come loro: non devi mai prendere nulla sul serio e comportarti come gli altri...devi essere un coglione, sempre e comunque.» gli sintetizzo recuperando un breve istante di lucidità. «Anche quando qualcosa ti interessa davvero devi usarla per poi buttarla via come se non ti interessasse.» aggiungo amara, come se lo stessi dicendo più a me stessa che a lui. «Non siamo delle fottute lattine di birra: stessa latta colorata, stessa birra di merda, stesso codice a barre...ogni persona è diversa!» mi spiega buttando a terra quella che era la sua lattina di birra. «Io sono fortuitamente diverso e non voglio essere come quelle teste di cazzo.» scandisce, sputando ogni lettera. «Pensi di essere come tutti gli altri Sam?» mi chiede poi Shawn rompendo, con voce roca, il magico silenzio che si era finalmente venuto a creare. «No.» ribatto ovvia. «Vieni.» sussurra Shawn alzandosi velocemente dall'asfalto per raggiungermi. --- I numeri di un codice a barre corrispondono ad una sola entità, unica ed irripetibile. Rivendicate la vostra unicità, sempre. Queste parole sono per te, ti dedico tutto. «...ho fatto tutto questo per te, perché è questo quello che fai quando qualcuno ti fa sentire così vivo come tu hai fatto sentire me.»
