The Advisor had been on Earth for decades after falling through a time rift during the War. The incident caused them to regenerate and left them stranded on the Original Earth in late 1930s New York. As they wait for their timeline to match up with their husband, The Doctor, they decide to bide their time checking up on their husband's companions that he spoke so fondly about. During one of their visits to Sarah Jane, they have a feeling of anticipation and foreboding. The Doctor and The Advisor's timelines had finally synced up.

Torchwood has taken many things from the Doctor. Today, though, he takes something from them---an alien from a planet that burned like his, who knows who the Doctor is, who doesn't remember where she's come from, and who has a secret buried inside her that could end the universe if it wished. But at heart, the Doctor is an optimist and she deserves a life, so he invites her to travel the universe with him and Martha. He wants to help her recover her memories. He didn't plan on falling for her. The newly (and aptly) named Enigma is thrilled. She wants to travel with the Doctor, the man she's been seeing in her dreams for centuries. She didn't plan on falling for him. Somehow, it happens anyway.

Sometimes, the Doctor meets someone on his journey that makes him pause. Sometimes, that person becomes someone very important to him. Sometimes, he discovers they always were. Notes: This story includes references to and stories of the Doctor's time at the Academy, as well as how things possibly work on Gallifrey and in Time Lord culture -- some are based on research, possibly some bits and pieces I've picked up from other fanfic, and some of my own imagination. All that to say, I'm sure I diverge from canon on more than one occasion, but where possible, I've tried to use canon details from various DW sources. This story references the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 and the impact they had on one resident of New York City in particular. I hope to do my best to represent the pain and grief one person might have experienced had they lost loved ones on that day. I only own the original characters I've inserted in this story, however I don't own the Tenth Doctor or any other BBC Doctor Who characters. Her legs dangled from the tree's branches as she gazed down at the Doctor. His eyes glistened their deep brown and he grasped the branches nearby, his heartbeats hammering in his chest as he looked into her dilated eyes. There was only quiet in their willow, quiet and stillness. Because that's how they liked it, no aliens nor running nor rescuing nor burdens.
