Dalton planned to raise his daughter in middle-class suburbia, Texas, in a high-end school surrounded by friends and family with jobs that had pensions, homes that had big lawns, top-notch academics, and the safety of gated neighborhoods. Many of those plans are ruined when the earth is massacred by a global cult, leaving the earth and its people to face demonic creatures of its worst nightmares. With America's humanity now driven to dangerously low population, Dalton can't be too picky with what school district he enrolls Camila in. Lucky enough to find sanctuary in a community dubbed Ellington, Dalton and Camila have higher hopes for a semi-normal life after the gates of hell first opened. Dalt begins working as a scout, one of three dozen men and women who venture the Texas wasteland in search of supply, land, and protection; Camila gains friendship in the small schoolhouse with only a few children her own age.
The Reborn Children of the Healed World, on the other hand, celebrate America's rebirth. With their siblings finally freed, the experience of magic faces far fewer obstacles. These practices, of course, may come with a price. It's not uncommon for the last of America's antis to encounter any small or large group of Reborn Children. Friendly or violent.
On a new scout up the city, Dalton anticipates a high load-out at a set of apartments. His goal is quickly overbooked when an ambitious Camila sneaks out to join the scout and catches attention of the nearby Children. A gruesome, traumatizing fight between scouts, cult members, and a snallygaster leaves Dalton and his team traumatized - as he watches a trio of Children carry away his crying daughter.
A lead is all he needs. With little to no knowledge about how the Reborn Children operate and militarize, Dalton finds one lead to track down his twelve-year old daughter. This father leaves the comfort of Ellington to track her down, to find the assistance of those who he'd never expect.
