She is selected for a month-long summer internship as a guest editor of Ladies' Day magazine, but her time in New York City is unfulfilling as she struggles with issues of identity and societal norms. The Bell Jar chronicles the crack-up of Esther Greenwood: brilliant, beautiful, enormously talented, and successful, but slowly going under-maybe for the last time. Sylvia Plath masterfully draws the reader into Esther's breakdown with such intensity that Esther's insanity becomes completely real and even rational, as probable and accessible an experience as going to the movies. Such deep penetration into the dark and harrowing corners of the psyche is an extraordinary accomplishment and has made The Bell Jar a haunting American classic.

Cecelia has struggled with Bipolar disorder, Prodromal Schizophrenia , and depression since she was 14. Now she heads off into life with unstable grounds, she faces so much tragedy that her sister puts her in a Psychiatric ward after she relapses. When she arrives at the ward she meets a man named Elijah, who she falls in love with. Well, I don't know to call it love, or obsession but either way its an off limits situation. He's her doctor, and she's the mental patient.
