Avery Standish was the opposite to her sister Claire. Claire was miss popular, the princess of the school and she always looked beautiful in her floral dresses and high heels along with her flawless skin and perfect hair. Avery was not like that, she had never been seen in a dress, always in her large denim jacket and the most she did with her hair was straighten it or put in in a ponytail. Sure she was getting ok grades and had a great personality but who cared about that if at first glance you were a cocky loner? But she didn't care, she had herself and now she had a month of Saturday detention with her best friend Vernon. Great.

John Bender is known as a criminal at Shermer High School. His rough exterior and rebellious nature make it easy for people to label him as a troublemaker. However, beneath the surface lies a complexity few have bothered to understand. Angela Williams is the opposite of John, a shy, studious girl, admired for her intelligence and kindness. Despite their differences, fate brings them together when Angela needs a partner for a science project.
