Duff. One simple, 4 letter word that has the potential to severely ruin someone's entire high school experience. Every group has one; the most unattractive member of the group who is also the easiest to talk to, therefore making their friends more appealing. But Hayley Bloom learns that being the duff isn't always so fun, and maybe, just maybe, being yourself could be kinda cool.

Hey guys, this is my entry for The DUFF writing contest!! Tell me what you think :)

I've got it all: wrong side of the tracks, no driver's license, 7-course meal's a 6-pack and potato where I live! If you could get inside my head, it would sound like this: Over grinding bus gears, I hear whispers, "Poor Lucy!" Unfortunately, I'm poor Lucy! Horrified to see fingers pointing at me, I reassure myself that this nonsense is unavoidable on field trips. I live in the State of Denial, USA, so I pretend that Debby, seated beside me with our clarinet cases on her lap, is the object of the gossip. Psychological transference works for me! I hate rumors, especially when they're about me! I'm not used to them anymore, thanks to Andy. Dating him has spoiled me! Because of him, I haven't been the target of ugly gossip for months! Vicious lies are unbearable! I know because I've been there, my whole freshman year! All of a sudden, why am I "poor Lucy" again? Is Andy being a pretzel?
