After the first wave, only darkness remains. After the second wave, only the lucky escape. After the third wave, only the unlucky survive. After the fourth wave, just one rule applies, trust no one. Now it's the dawn of the 5th wave and Squad 19 looks like they're in good shape to graduate and actually fight against the force that has destroyed their past lives. Fourteen year-old squad member Green looks up to no one else more than 19's squad leader, Ringer, who they all believe will lead them to victory with her sharp mind and even sharper shot on the firing range. When a new recruit arrives however, squad 19's chances of being #1 are threatened by his smart mouth and apparent hatred for everyone. Soon enough, Green finds himself, and fellow privates, making choices between themselves and their squad members, and what could become choices between life and death. But according to Ringer, "you either die a hero, or live long enough to become the villain." A/N: Hey! I didn't make up this storyline! The only thing I made up are the new characters! Pretty much everything in this story belongs to Rick Yancey. This is just a companion to my favorite story :)

Before the waves, before all the pain and suffering, before the Others destroyed everything; Ben Parish had only one thing on his mind. Her name was Dakota Joseph and she was the most beautiful specimen Ben had ever laid eyes on. After the waves Dakota saw herself as another one of the Others overlooked scraps, the plate of leftovers that you pick at when there's nothing else to eat. Not even good enough for them to finish her off in the first four waves. Ben had a different theory, a more confident perspective. The others weren't eliminating the toughest ones first and then weeding out the stragglers. Instead they were getting rid of the weak ones so they could get to the real fighters, separating the wheat from the chaff. What the others didn't understand about wiping out an entire species is that after you take the first ones out, you're going to be left with some pretty pissed off remainders. And they're going to come at you with everything they've got because they have nothing else to lose. Whether they identify themselves as scraps or survivors they are coming and they will be the perfect human weapon in this formerly hopeless war. A traumatized kid herself, it's a bit of a stressful situation. The newly dubbed 'Snowflake' has to find a way to deal with the death of billions, her family included, while training to be a perfect soldier in the middle of the apocalypse. Not to mention the cocky, sarcastic, and incredibly idiotic squad leader she calls her friend.
