Lấy bối cảnh ngay trước khi Lăng Cửu Thời và Nguyễn Lan Chúc bước vào cánh cửa thứ mười một, khi mọi thứ vẫn còn treo lơ lửng giữa lựa chọn và số phận, giữa "cứu một người tôi quen biết, hay cứu một đám người tôi không quen". Nắng vương cuối thềm cũng là nơi để Cửu Thời và Lan Chúc nói ra những điều mà bộ phim không cho phép họ nói, làm những điều mà họ chưa được phép làm.
