papaslittlexperiment
There are these moments in between, where the needles are withdrawn, where the shocks are turned down, when the endless void makes way for light, and when Papa's voice fades.
When he can stop being Subject Zero, and disappear into his own private little world.
The Happy Place, where the sun shines on his skin--unmarred in his little paradise--and blades of grass tickle his ankles, and leaves fall into hair grown past his ears, and a happy little song chimes quietly in the back of his head.
The only sound that of water trickling in some far-off river, twigs snapping gently beneath his bare feet, birds tweeting from the tops of trees that reach up into the perpetually setting sky, and the song--nameless, and without words.
In this little world, he can be a version of whoever he was before Papa took him, before memories grew hazy with grief for a life he can no longer remember.
In his paradise, he can be alone. Away from the constant, dissecting gaze of scientists. Away from the heavy stare of guards whose hands' forever rest on their holsters, fingers twitching to draw their guns and put down the freak.
In the Happy Place, Papa's expectations are lost to him, and the guilt sat heavy within his chest falls further away with every breath of fresh, unfiltered air.
The Happy Place is his own little slice of paradise. His respite from the hell that is his life beyond this world of his own imagining.
The Happy Place is his.
