Ivy Nora has made a living on the streets of the Ikra, an unkind desert city, through a life-long career of thievery, the funds of which she puts towards her true love: art. Recently, she's found company with a contemporary by the name of Vesper Morna, and together they've spent six months together pilfering from the pockets of Ikra's richest. But, when a simple job to steal a few loaves of bread goes awry, the eyes and ire of those above them are drawn. As the city watch begins to make a target of them, and the thieves work to escape their descending blades, Ivy has an unexpected encounter with Ikra's baroness, who is far more strange and sympathetic than Ivy would've thought.

And pretty quickly at that. In order to escape they must face perilous dangers, play with the darker side of magic, and learn what their emotions truly mean in order to make a plan for one of them to murder their greatest enemy, and the other to murder their sister.
