Thistle is saved by a fire elemental witch who takes a knife to the heart in order to save her life. She soon discovers, after healing her unexpected protector Alder Barclay, that she is the last true Hedge Witch, the last Haegtesse. She is the only witch left with the ability to meld plant and animal life, to heal what is broken, to create new life.
