The story starts in the Scorch. The setting and time is a little after the immunes have reached Paradise, so I guess you could say it takes place right after "The Death Cure" ends. It's been several months since the initial Gladers and the immunes have been living in Paradise. Thomas still assumes that he'd killed Newt... but he thought wrong. Apparently, Thomas had managed to shoot the exact part of the brain where the Flare was taking place in Newt, and without knowing it, has saved him. Kind of. Introducing Eliza, an immune Newt met while living with the Cranks, the two struggle to live, facing new problems with what seems like every day. They need each other to survive, it's as simple as that. Then someone unexpected arrives to take Newt and Eliza to the Paradise, except it's easier said than done. Has Thomas really saved Newt? Or has he done something even worse than killing him? Not to mention, it's not really the time for Eliza to let her feelings get in the way. It's a typical day in the life of a Glader in 'Escape'.
