This is the story of two people loving each other quietly, both thinking it's "just friendship." A lot of the strongest loves start as friendship. When someone becomes your safe place, your comfort, your "I'll tell you everything" person, it's easy to confuse it with "this is just how best friends are." Especially when you're young.
