A young teenage girl, haunted by the memories of her father's execution, attempts to escape a cruel regime by night. A solitary woman, abandoned by her husband, inadvertently plays into the cruel hands of 'the state'. In another totalitarian regime a traffic light fixer is dealt with brutally for admiring a sunset. All these characters capture the essence of what it's like to be disempowered and cruelly dehumanised at the hands of a heinous, corrupt power. This sharp collection of pertinent short stories throws an at times uncomfortable light on cruelty, injustice and persecution that is all too relevant today. But ultimately these stories celebrate the strength and determination to survive at all costs, that exists within all of us.

After all, physicist Niels Bohr once said, "The best weapon of a dictatorship is secrecy." Along with this chaos, Ryan is trying to deal with the stress of Ramona becoming distant due to her past reappearing, and the new rules and regulations making his career walk on a tightrope. The national anthem may say otherwise, but the United States is no longer the land of the free and the home of the brave. Not with the new government. Moments before the main character Derva tries to take his own life, he writes to a distant relative, accusing her of driving himself and her grandson to their deaths by supporting the current regime in her home country. First enraged Esther, the distant relative moves on with her life, but being more and more confronted with the regime she eventually joins the rebellion, believing Derva had died. Derva survives his suicide attempt and moves to the regime led country, pushing for things to change. During the story many other characters who're living within the regime are met, like the vice president's daughter and his wife, a teenage girl who's being deported and her grandma who's imprisoned, all painting a picture which destroys the facade so many believe in.

Countries have been reassigned as numbers and there are only a few independent states left. The one thing you do not do is cross Princips Ltd, break the law and you can be jailed or even killed. When Kira steals some bread for her starving mother she is caught and put up for slavery. Her new master is known for being brutal, but reputations are not always what they seem, especially when you are taken to one of the most beautiful islands in the world, a far cry from the deprivation of the slums or bright lights of the city.

In a meticulously ordered 1955, even health is a matter of state directive. Mr. Z, a sixty-two-year-old bank clerk of no particular note, receives his "sentence" from the doctors: daily walks, not for pleasure, but to ensure he remains robust enough to serve the Realm and the Church for years to come. As sparrows flit with "pointless joy" and children sing hymns of the King while their stomachs ache, Mr. Z embarks on his prescribed exercise. Every step is an act of mandated well-being, every movement watched. He must report his walk, justify his health, and sign a confirmation that he has fulfilled his duty. The state demands not just his labor, but his very vitality. But as he observes a free-roaming dog, "harmless and therefore feared," a quiet rebellion begins to stir within his "third half"-the part that knows and does not act. For the past fifteen years no one questioned the Sacred Hour in the town of Candlewick. Until one night a mysterious conch shell sounds throughout the Sacred Hour, only to be heard by two young teenagers. Aurora Alvarez is a misfit amongst her peers, desperately trying to fit in but failing to live up to the expectations of her parents and society. She unexpectedly discovers she is fated to ally herself with none other than rebellious Boreas Stockington, who allegedly escaped from the impenetrable Candlewick Prison. These two young teenagers must embark on a perilous adventure where they need to help Otus, a thirty-foot giant, prevent a cataclysmic event from occurring-the Geometric Storm. The journey will take them far from the safety of Wishbone Avenue and into the depths of the unknown and the secrets of the past. However, nothing could prepare these unlikely heroes for facing their own inner demons and the realization that Aurora and Boreas are on this quest together, whether they want to be or not. They're the deadliest animals of both the zodiac and horoscope family. I was born to kill. My mother helped me realize that, the night she entrusted me with a very important task. She wanted something that the millions-worth of jewelry worn around her neck could not buy. She wanted a life. Mother wanted me to kill." Author's note: I'm actually really proud of this! I wrote this story as a history project during Sophomore Year and I got really really into it. I loved writing scary and dark things that make people uncomfortable. I left this as the version I wrote when I turned my essay in, so it may have some small grammatical errors. Overall though, I am still very proud of it; I was definitely really into it, and I'm definitely totally 100% not even being narcissistic! :)

A world where Hitler and the Axis Powers have triumphed, a "dystopian" society that is technologically advanced but has fallen into an abyss of human virtues.

The paper entitled "Totalitarian System in Lowry's The Giver and Orwell's 1984" explained about the similarities and differences of totalitarianism in the both novel. This paper was written during Literary Criticism course in 2016.
