At midnight, 50 kilometres south of Tennant Creek, 200 cattle from a large station 25 kilometres away had escaped from their paddock. They were wondering in a large mob along the train line as The Ghan approached. The driver didn't see the cattle until it was too late. He slammed on the brakes and the train went right off the tracks. The Ghan skidded 100 metres before rolling three times!
