She awakens in the grip of fear. There is a noisy rush of air. Without even a glance, she darts forward, then tucks and bounds back and to the left. She is a mouse in the open. The hawk's wing brushes by, mussing her long hair. His claw reaches out, missing her by millimeters as he lands. She breaks full speed for a log she sees. The raptor's eyes follow his meal through the dry grass. He pivots on his strong claws. His great wings are ungainly on the ground. He tucks them in and hops at his prey. Anticipating this, she stays low and hops back, making him again overshoot. The bird is between her and safety. He's every bit as fast as she is.
mouse has no memory of who she is, not even a name, or where this is, or when this is, but she is multi-lingual and has uncanny scientific knowledge, especially predator studies. 'I am extraordinary, for a mouse...'
