Septima is a sixteen-year-old Roman girl promised in marriage to a man she does not love. She refuses to become a submissive wife like the matrons who surround her. Rebellious, spontaneous, and often reckless, she longs to break free from the strict Roman laws that weigh heavily upon women during the reign of Emperor Augustus (1st century BC).
She will brave countless dangers to confront the realities of the world beyond her sheltered life-she will suffer, encounter love in the arms of a Gaul who will protect her, and learn to live by herself and for herself. Drawing her loyal slave Sabine into this perilous adventure, she will constantly defy Rome and its ever-present authority.
