When Martyn was fifteen, he saw his first crow. The two stared at each other for a second- the bird's beady black eyes versus Martyn's green ones- and then the crow tipped its head, spread its wings, and flew off. Not long after, Martyn's mother came down with a sudden illness and passed away. Ever since then, Martyn's been traveling the land. If a crow shows up in the place he's in, he leaves as quickly as possible. They mean misfortune, he's puzzled out, so he shouldn't stick around when they're near. Grian wasn't one for teams, he didn't enjoy sports, he hated theater, thought playing an instrument was boring, and couldn't catch anything to save his life, so, he didn't join any. But when he finds out that he can't graduate with his class unless he takes an extracurricular Grian scrambles to find something to do. After getting hit in the face with a basketball 4 times he puts the idea of sports to rest. One day Grian's twin sister Pearl cashes in an I-O-U from when they were kids, leading Grian to be forced to sing for her band Boatem, in place of their old lead singer. Grian realizes pretty quickly that maybe being in a team isn't as bad as he originally thought.

Ren finds stowaway Martyn on his ship and spares him on account of the other's wit and sharp tongue. As time goes on, the two men grow more and more fond of each other. Upon meeting other travelers, they are surprised to find how protective Ren is of Martyn and how much Martyn seems to step right through the ruling pirate's walls.
