Hummer - or rather, Charles Milverton Hammond, - is London's one and only consulting detective. He is most intelligent, the rings that contort the devil's hand, the solver of mysteries. He has no companion for none are equal to him. He is dogged in everything he does; he is ruthless and a fiery sword of Damocles; and most importantly, he has nobody. He is everything but has nothing.
