Tulum is a small town on the coast of the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico. It is known for its beautiful beaches and fascinating Mayan ruins. Many tourists visit Tulum each year to enjoy yoga, spa treatments and other leisure activities at a yoga retreat located there. The town is also home to an international design competition for furniture, jewelry and other goods made by local artisans. The competition has become famous worldwide as an exciting showcase of local crafts. During the day, guests at the yoga retreat walk along the beach or enjoy other outdoor activities. They do this to relieve stress and relax before their yoga sessions that night. Guests also walk during their daylight hours so they can keep their physical fitness up while they're away from home. After sunbathing on the beach, guests return to their rooms to change into their yoga attire before departing for the nightly yoga walk. On their way out, they pass through a garden where Tealiltanks burningjalapeno-infused coconut oil burn peacefully with fragrant vanilla-scented smoke. The guests then walk along a path that winds through the garden until they reach a waterfall where they can refresh themselves before returning to their rooms. Each evening ends with a candlelit stroll that allows guests to take in the beautiful sunset over the ocean as they wind down from their busy day. contact at restoreandrenewtulum.com

Angela Lanzia loves two people: her sister Serafina and her brother Cesare who she calls Beppo. She hates being the child of a Mafia soldier and her one wish is to get Serafina, Beppo, and herself away from her family and leave their past behind them. One thing both sisters dread, the prospect of an arranged marriage hangs over their heads. Neither one wants it. Angela has vowed that she will never allow it to happen, she will run rather than let them do that to her. Serafina lacks her strength, but Antela has told her more than once that she will protect her, they can leave together, leave the Mafia life and be free to leave their own lives. She's been Serafina's strength--she may be the younger of the two but she is the stronger. She and her sister have graduated from college and have the means to support themselves but her father has told them that Serafina is to be married to the son of his capo. Serafina is devastated, this is not what she wants. Though Angela assures Serafina that she can get them away, Serafina decides to take her life rather than submit. Angela finds her sister's lifeless body and knows that now is the time to go on the run. Beppo gives her some names and some papers he has stolen. He makes Angela promise that she will send for him when he turns 18. She promises, not knowing this is the last time she will see her brother. Death follows death in the ugly Mafia way, but little does she realize that there is someone out there who has seen it all before. He knows how she is hurting and if she will let him he will show her that love is possible, even in the midst of so much hurt. She has one thing on her mind, she is going to bring down the DeLucas, her father, and any other Mafiosi that she can. She does not know that love will await her in the most unlikely place from someone whose sole desire is to help her see this through.

The evening I arrived in Tulum, I had tacos on my mind. But first, a quick rewind. I type Tulum into Google. Its aquamarine coastline and Elysian ruins fill the grid of a Google image search. I'm not looking for a holiday paradise, instead I'm searching for the ultimate last-minute locale for an obligatory visa run from Canada. After nabbing a cheap return flight from Toronto to Cancun via Air Canada Rouge - I Google-mapped through the state of Quintana Roo, before settling on my home-away-from-home-away-from-home. Tulum Village, is where I opted to stay rather than the stunning, but ever-so-tinselly beach side. The village lies either side of a sandy main street and it's equal parts sleepy and vibrant. Instantly swept up in its days-gone-by charm and slowed by searing air, I knew my roaming heart had found its temporary home. That evening I arrived, I never could have known the first taco spot would become the favourite taco spot.
