Full disclosure... I wrote this story years ago during the 1980s when still in college. It started as a class journaling project. As disclosed in the story, the writing was motivated when I attended Kim's wedding, the friend from the story who was Vickie's college roommate and, to this day, her lifelong friend since grade school. There were recent tweaks made to the content, near its end, that were [a]rtificially [i]nfluenced in the style of one of my favorite authors, Sam Shepard. In general, the story is about those moments in life that shape us and is a journey through young love. Enjoy-

These poems walk through the nights of reckless adventures and house parties with friends, the struggle of working dead-end jobs while trying to stay in school, and the fear of wondering where the next meal will come from. They explore the pain of making impossible choices, including giving up a firstborn child for adoption and carrying the lifelong question of whether she will one day understand why. Through heartbreak, regret, broken friendships, family, fatherhood, failure, and moments of hope, the book captures what it feels like to grow up while still trying to figure out who you are. From 20 to 29, every year leaves something behind-a scar, a lesson, a memory, or a reason to keep going. This is not a story about having everything figured out. It is about learning that sometimes you have to get lost before you can find yourself. These are the lessons I didn't understand when I was living them-but I understand them now.

My family - if there's anything left of it - haven't seen or heard of me since its members fled. Every day of my life, if I can even bring myself to call it that anymore, I witness the few souls who still surround me dropping to the ground in a lake of pure crimson, dead, waiting for whatever remains of their lives to drain into the sewers. I wanted to fight at first. This was my city, my parents' city, the city of a thousand glorious parties and a million dreams, the city of lovers, the city I loved. I didn't want to see it crumble into its own ashes. Three long years ago, I would have done anything to stop that happening. Three years on, and I'm not so sure...
