She knew it had something to do with her mother if it was how she acted or how she looked she wasn't sure, for she had never seen a picture. Though her father is a horrible man Mae was still as bright as could be whether talking about something that interest her for hours, calling out a soc or hanging out with her girls or the gang. Mae was the brightest greaser girl there was that was actually proud to be a greaser. Oh and falling for her best friend along the way.

She moved on to the Eastern side of town where the Greasers ruled since she couldn't afford to live on the West side. There, she met Sodapop Curtis at the gas station he worked at. He was the most attractive man Shirley had ever seen. When she also becomes friends with a sweet Johnny Cade, she realizes how small her new town is as she constantly runs into who everyones calls 'the sweetheart Greaser'.
