La historia posterior de Roma, sea en la Edad Media y en las épocas sucesivas, presenta un carácter más bien comunal, localista, y está casi siempre ligada a la historia del Pontificado, la de Italia y la de pueblos, reinos e imperios que intentaron (lo hicieron en ocasiones) ejercer dominio sobre la ciudad. Con casi 3000 años de historia, la ciudad es un buen ejemplo del desarrollo cíclico que puede tener una entidad urbana: un desarrollo geográfico y demográfico hasta el límite de lo posible (Roma Antigua), el estancamiento y el declive hasta casi desaparecer (Edad Media), y un nuevo desarrollo (Edades Moderna y Contemporánea). Pocas ciudades han tenido tal evolución y jugado a la vez un rol tan importante en la Historia universal, ya sea como crisol de civilizaciones o sede de importantes movimientos artísticos y de instituciones, tanto civiles como religiosas. La persistencia de esta ciudad y de su población, en medio de tantos avatares históricos, constituye un hecho destacado.
