This is a short story that was published in my college literary magazine, The Scriblerian SSC. The main character is an unnamed narrator who is a palace servant for the "Heir of the Presidency", and is the daughter of "His Majesty, The President." As you can tell, this country is far from a democracy and the story focuses on the heir through the narrator's point of view. It has a happy ending and I hope you will like it. After all, physicist Niels Bohr once said, "The best weapon of a dictatorship is secrecy." Along with this chaos, Ryan is trying to deal with the stress of Ramona becoming distant due to her past reappearing, and the new rules and regulations making his career walk on a tightrope. The national anthem may say otherwise, but the United States is no longer the land of the free and the home of the brave. Not with the new government.
