The world is able to function because of a behaviour layer called the Current. It's the reason why fire burns, water flows, and magic exists at all. Most never even think about it, and unicorns are the only ones who can touch it.
Twin sisters Star and Brook has always lived peacefully together in the Southern Forest until a night of fire and monsters drives them from their forest home into Aurelia, a kingdom of gleaming walls, iron reins, and unfamiliar order. There, they meet two Aurelia knights who can wield The Current like a blade; Cinder shines bright and spontaneous, Ranger stays cold and inert.
The monsters who roam the wild shouldn't exist. They violate every Current Law the unicorns know. Bullets pass through them, and they vanish into thin air upon death. Yet their attacks are real and their victims can survive, recover fine, and smile again.
Except something is fundamentally wrong. Victims start forgetting memories and their shadows start pointing the wrong way. Every day that passes, it gets a little worse.
As two unlikely pairs are pushed into action - one fleeing north into ice and ash chasing the source of an ancient mystery, the other forced to watch everything go wrong inside kingdom walls - both sides come to the same dreadful conclusion: the monsters were never the real threat, they're a symptom of something far older and far closer to home.
This is a story of fire and ice, freedom and control, and unbreakable bonds forged in a world where even memory is no longer guaranteed to stay real.
