Unnerving Stories

There's a 15-hour difference between Billings, Montana, and Tokyo, Japan. A 14-hour difference from Manila. A 6 Hour difference from Dublin. I can recall certain things from every country I've visited. The scent of rain brings back the green pastures of Ireland. Gray rumble can't help but cause my mind to spur with visions of Scotland. Distant fires bring smells that make me remember Ghana. Family pictures take me back to the beaches of the Philippines. Every country I've stepped foot on will always have a place in my heart. And yet, as I sit here at midnight, it always comes back to Japan. I think about the strangers I saw, the temples I walked in, the long hours on the trains. The quiet nights of listening to the dwindling sound of the nightlife outside my apartment, letting the dull glow of the street lights whisk me to slumber. My time in Japan inspired me to keep track of every detail in every day remembered. If I knew that everything I knew would come to a sudden stop, I would have taken care of my journals. I would have made a more vigorous attempt to save the pictures and videos that had been lost from computer corruptions. I would have tried to keep that strong sense of being connected to something higher and meaningful. I'd give up anything to return, even blind to return to the places I once walked in. I miss it all. I cannot forget everything. The stories in this collection are ones I've heard over the past. From family, friends, and strangers, as well as my own personal experiences. I've accumulated a large volume of short stories. How much of these are fake and authentic? I've decided to let the reader to find for themselves.

I'm not going to tell you who 'she' is. I'm not going to tell you what 'she' means to me. Whoever 'she' is to you, that depends on your own experiences. 'She' might be different for all of us.

When a young girl decides to inspect a seemingly innocuous piece of furniture in her ancestral home, she is pulled into a harrowing, painful experience that her parents, with mysterious adeptness, try desperately to save her from.

"I warned you not to get in my way and you did. It's time for you to pay." I back up against the wall as she darts toward me before closing a hand around my throat, pinning me to the wall. I let out a small squeak of fear and pain as my pulse quickens. Using her free hand she reaches into her pocket and pulls out a....knife. It is long and flat with a menacing hooked end. I shudder and squeeze my eyes tight. Using the tip of the blade she traces my face from my eyebrow down to my chin. "I-I-I'm sorry I-I didn't mean to!" I screech. She smirks, "Why do you need to be so involved with him?" She hisses. I wince, "B-because I love him." My heart stutters."

The Richards are a normal suburban family in Philly. Dirk is the unemployed father with a drinking habit. He drinks to forget an accident that caused him to lose his job. The accident was fatal for another boy's father. Dirk feels that he is responsible for the fatherless boy and takes him under his wing, even inviting him to dinner with his family. But the boy is not as seems and becomes increasingly malevolent towards the family, forcing Dirk to make a decision that will break him.

A girl, trapped in her own fantasy world... until someone comes along and pulls her out.

Bo Saint's fears have become very limited over her years that she's spent in the hospital. Between losing her only parent, and her predicament, she's not sure where she has to go now. Her sense of security has been robbed from her for years but now, she feels like she has nothing left to hold on to. Her brothers, Harrison, Scotty, James, and Carson try to be her saving grace, taking her places they know she loves and places they think she should see. Bo tries to hold her head high as she trys one final time, with the help of a friend, to put her life back together before it no longer exists. Because at the end of the day, she is the only hope her family has at being "the strong saints" again.

A lone traveler discovers a hidden stairway beneath an ancient monastery, leading to a basement where a small body lies half-buried in a pit. As the chamber stirs with unseen breath and scratching from the earth, the monastery reveals that its silence has always been alive.
