Vampires had hidden in the human's society, masking their true nature so they wouldn't be hunted and killed. But all that changed after the war. Humans were either forced into hiding, made into vampires, or forced to be servants or pets. Being a pet to a vampire was the worst possible status for a human, they were treated like dirt; being forced to follow all the commands of their vampire masters and be living blood bags.
