A witch raised to hunt, finds herself in Mystic Falls after the death of her parents. But not only is she raised to hunt, her coven has the curse, the curse of a girl becoming a slayer. It was put on her coven after half of them were slaughtered by Katherine Pierce in 1649. Despite her hatred for vampires, she mostly hangs out with Bonnie or Stefan, who although a vampire has been a friend of her coven for years. A pair of vampires had killed her parents, she could never disobey her last promise to them, or the fate of her coven but vampires have a special way of digging at feelings.

Many doppelgängers have been created throughout the story of the Vampire Diaries but this story is much different. Athena was born in Italy and is the adopted sister to Vincente Cruz, a vampire slayer that dates back to 1110 AD when the brotherhood of the five was created. They were created by a dying witch, who was a descendant of the very powerful witch named Qetsiyah, who wanted them to cure and kill the very first immortal, Silas. The witch met athena as a result of her brother being one of the five and immediately thought she was Amara Petrova (the very first doppelgänger) and that she had been awoken from the spell Qetsiyah hexed on her, long ago. The ancestors told her that Amara is still very much asleep and hidden. Athena was then used as Qetsiyahs back up plan to torture and kill Silas incase the five failed. The witch was smart about using iris because a man named Klaus Mikaelson killed all of them later on in Italy, 1114 AD. Athena was hexed asleep before the five was created and hidden in Europe by the dying witch, whom used the remaining part of her life to cast a ritual that binds every life the five killed, including their own. This spell was used the day she created the five to give iris the advantage to die more than once and be resurrected to fulfill Qetsiyahs quest to seek out and destroy all vampires, including Silas once the brotherhood of the five died. Athena was taken to the new world by a coven of witches and was awoken in 1862 by a witch named Emily Bennett so that she may continue her journey in killing Silas. It's 2013 now and there's rumors of Silas's tomb being found.
