When his dad gives him a journal for his birthday that once belonged to his mother, it gives him a reason to leave Corona - to search for the ancient Eternal Library and find the truth about what happened to his mother. But these trials aren't easy... and with his mother's old work partner Donella on his trail, he's going to need some help from the brightest minds of the seven kingdoms! This is my take of the Vat7k au created by Tangled the Series storyboard artists, Kay Ritter and Anna Lencioni! Parts of this may also be inspired by the animatics made by jjggrt and raccoonfather's and justinedaca's takes on the story (which I can say are great you should go read them if you haven't!) Honestly, Varian wasn't sure what to expect for his 18th birthday. Maybe a small celebration? Well, he did get one of those, but his dad also gave him a journal. Ulla. That's the person who wrote it. Hugo could still place exactly where that stupid blue streak flowed against the rest of his hair. He could still count the freckles that dusted the tip of his nose and the edges of his cheeks. He could just about remember how his lip would curl when he smiled. It was lopsided- the left side of his mouth always pushed up just a little bit more than the right. He was a shadow, an echo of something he never deserved. He could still feel the rough calluses on his hands lightly scratch across his cheeks. His lips still tingled with the memory. ~*~ Or: ~*~ The bridge connecting the human kingdom of Ingvarr and the fairy kingdom of Corona has been shattered. After being forced into hiding after the events of last year, everything familiar to Hugo was now gone. Hugo knew about Varian's past villainy. He never expected with the wave of a wand, he'd be with the very same Varian after he was jailed. Now Hugo must keep Varian distracted by playing the supportive boyfriend until Quirin arrives back in Corona or use a potion to change this oddly suave version of his dorky boyfriend back before he builds an army of automatons.

Varian's father was killed by an infamous pirate named Ruby Scourge. Seeking revenge, Varian forms his own crew to go and look for her but runs into a snag when a young and flirtatious Captain Hugo and his crew intercept his ship, stealing something essential to his revenge plan. Will the two pirate captains be able to put aside their rivalry and team up to stop Ruby Scourge once and for all? Note: this story was almost named Swashbuckling Bros with Benefits. Let that sink in.

This story is my version of a fanfic by the wonderful Justinedaca. I fully recommend her story. Not only is it a good read, but you need that story to make sense of this one. For my rewrite, I will be writing my own ideas for the parts she has not written yet. I am setting this rewrite after chapter 12 of her book. After that, you will read my wacky ideas. You will see my OC or Own Character, and I hope you will love her as much as I do. I will also try to stick to the original creator's ideas but I am not afraid to take creative license. Basically, after he managed to capture the queen and all of that, instead of being put in jail, he was banished to Gotham. Thrown on the streets and forced to figure out how to live by himself with just Ruddiger and the few alchemy supplies his raccoon companion managed to sneak him. I came up with this after I had just finished a fic about Nico in Gotham. I started reading a Vat7k fic before thinking, what if Varian ended up in Gotham. I couldn't find one so I decided to write one. (I do not own vat7k, tangled, tangled the series, or dc)
