A national-level archer from Lanjigarh (Kalahandi), Odisha, Simanchal's childhood was not rosy. The miserable state of affairs at home forced his sister to seek help at Vedanta's Child Care Centre. Like thousands of children, Simanchal was supported by Vedanta through childhood, schooling, college and employment. Now Simanchal is the local archery coach, teaching young kids the skills of the sport, as well as training himself for the 2024 Olympics! While the potential of brick manufacturing was appealing, his conscience didn't allow him to go down the traditional route. And there started his quest to find a sustainable way of manufacturing bricks, one that would provide a sustainable livelihood while ensuring no negative impact to the environment. Vedanta has invited Expression of Interest (EoI) for its Tuticorin-based smelter, which has been shut since mid-2018, following a Tamil Nadu government order. Husband and wife duo Kavita and Arjun hail from a small village in Jharsuguda, Odisha. After Arjun, a daily wage worker and the sole earning member of the family, was forced to quit work due to an injury, the couple decided to till the only piece of land they had to make a livelihood out of it. But lack of water, whether for irrigation or drinking, had made farming impossible. One day, they came across Vedanta's Jeevika Samriddhi land & water management project for local farmers in Jharsuguda. Our team helped them dig a well and install a solar pump, learn better farming techniques and access quality seeds, etc., and soon the couple had their field covered in lush crops. Like the story?
