Elena è un'abile restauratrice d'arte a Venezia, la cui vita è dedicata a riportare in vita la bellezza celata in antiche tele e affreschi. Meticolosa e solitaria, è un'ancora nel caos, ma avverte una persistente incompletezza che nemmeno la sua arte può colmare. Tutto cambia quando il suo quieto mondo viene violato da un colpo sordo nel cupo Palazzo Nero. Oltrepassando una soglia proibita, Elena si ritrova faccia a faccia con Draven: una figura imponente con la pelle simile a ossidiana levigata, corna ramificate come un cervo demoniaco e occhi che ardono come lava fusa. Draven è un essere antico, un frammento di un'era dimenticata, e ha una sola, brutale intenzione: fare di Elena la sua. Rapita e imprigionata nel suo sontuoso e labirintico palazzo, Elena è costretta a diventare la restauratrice personale del mostro.
