During a night raid when moored to some island he had to fight back with his chef's knives. His best friend, Uncle Johnny, was in Cuba during the Cuban Missile crisis. His mother's team cracked the Japanese code before VJ Day and wept at Roosevelt's eulogy parade. His immediate kin were career military, his uncle trained B-52 door gunners at Fort Sherman. His brother-in-law's big brother was killed in action at 19.
