Sherlock has only ever led a life of luxury, finding that as as he got older the fallacy of being normal was beginning to weigh on him. He didn't fit into the common mold of a rich man, and when it comes time for him to marry, that becomes increasingly obvious. Victor was just lucky to be alive, much less be living in the Holmes manor. His only friend had always been his only secret, and as a servant he had begun to feel special to his master's heart.
