Being a keen traveler, who documents the lives of women encountered, visiting Beirut in Lebanon last year was an eye-opener. Over 250,000 African and South East Asian women, are employed in the country as domestic maids. They have no employment or legal protection and instead are governed by their employers, under the kafala system. This lead them to be strictly controlled by employers, who often treat them harshly and they are exposed to physical and psychological abuse, in more extreme cases, sexual violence, torture and murder. The following are based on my observations while in Beirut.

Both man women are the two sides of this society. A society cannot function in the absence of anyone. Women should be treated equally as men. But women are exploited everywhere in this society. This story is of a young girl Swara Gadodia. The three seasons brought three different tragedies in her life. She was cheated by three different people in three-phase of her life. Her search for true love leads her to an unknown path. She vows to change the structure of this cruel society and make it safe for everyone. She opines that men and women have been created differently for the healthy functioning of society. The specialties women have been endowed with should be nurtured further. As a human being however woman is equal to a man. This is a feminist story. Here only Swara is the protagonist. There are no male leads.

The life of the Medusa

The story of an inspiring young women I spent the day with in Pristina. She was embracing individuality and feminism, in a country coming to grips with its recent tragic history. Also influencing other young people to break the mould and be themselves. She had done amazing things in her 19 years.
