Saylor Collins has always been the funny, curvy girl on campus. People love her for her warmth and humour, but never as anything more. When she finally gathers the courage to ask out her long-time crush Miles, his rejection is cruel. He tells her he does not date bigger girls.
Heartbroken and humiliated, Saylor wants to prove him wrong. With the help of her outspoken best friend Lola, she hatches a plan. If Miles will not value her, perhaps seeing her with the most sought-after boy at university will make him realise what he has lost. Lola suggests Finn Harris, the boy everyone wants but no one can get close to.
There is only one problem. Finn does not do fake. When Saylor nervously proposes the idea, he refuses and seems almost angry at the suggestion. Later, when he unexpectedly agrees, and Finn starts making their so-called relationship much more public and much more intense than she ever intended.
Suddenly Miles is showing interest. But Saylor is no longer certain she wants him, because the boy who was meant to be a fake boyfriend is making her feel very real things.
