I decided to try writing this after seeing a few fanfics of this event and most of them weren't historically accurate so... yeah. The thing is, in Canada, history teachers drill this event into our brains until we are crying and begging them to stop, so I think I know what I'm talking about when it comes to this. XD At any rate, if anything DOES happen to be incorrect, let me know and I'll fix it. Aside from that, enjoy! I do not own Hetalia or any characters.

"Amidst the noisy ball, in Hell Of everyday distress, I've seen you, but the secret's veil Was covering your face. Your fair eyes were sad and bright, And voice was so sweet, As sound of a pipe apart Or murmur of the sea. I've liked your fine and slender waist, And thoughtful image, whole, And sound of your voice -- it nests Forever in my soul... When tired, in my lone nights, I lie down to pause -- And see your beautiful sad eyes, And hear your merry voice. And, sad, I fall asleep to see My dreams that run above... I'm sure not whether I love thee -- But, maybe, I'm in love." -Alexsander Pushkin

I wrote this when I was about 13 years old, and it is very heavily inspired by Stephen Crane's 'The Red Badge of Courage' to the point where it's basically a rip-off. In particular you'll note this in a lot of the imagery, and the explicit use of dialect in dialogue -- the latter of which I now regret. I love 'The Red Badge of Courage' and wanted to write something of the same ilk, but being Canadian decided to set it in the War of 1812. In hindsight the epilogue is horrifically cliche.

Ella Rutherford longs for more than society allows. Obedience, refinement, and marriage-all have been politely refused. Despite her mother's tireless matchmaking, Ella prefers spinsterhood and to hide her fiercest thoughts behind the anonymity of ink. But when war reaches the heart of Washington and tragedy drives her from the only home she has known, Ella finds herself trapped with the smug Grant Dashwood-a jaded war correspondent with obligations of his own and little patience for genteel convention. What begins as a battle of wits soon deepens into a bond forged in fire. Yet as pressure mounts to conform, to marry, to abandon the words that once gave her purpose, Ella must choose between the safety of silence and the dangerous liberty of being heard. Lushly atmospheric and emotionally resonant, The Editor's Daughter is a story of ink and independence, love and duty, set against the smoldering backdrop of a nation at war.
