For moons, RiverClan has lived in uneasy peace with the other Clans. But one tiny kit is caught between two worlds.
Pikekit, a gray RiverClan she-kit with icy blue eyes and old scars far too young for a kit, is the daughter of Stoneflame, a proud ShadowClan warrior, and Ripplestream, a gentle RiverClan queen. Although her mother loves her more than anything, Stoneflame refuses to accept her, calling her an embarrassment to ShadowClan and a mistake he wishes had never been born.
Things only grow worse when Stoneflame takes a new mate, Pearfur, the ambitious ShadowClan deputy. Pearfur despises Pikekit just as much as Stoneflame does and believes the half-Clan kit will someday bring ruin to ShadowClan.
Meanwhile, in WindClan, a nervous medicine cat apprentice named Blazepaw begins receiving strange dreams from StarClan. The dreams show whispering stones, blood running through rivers, and a gray kit standing beneath a sky with no stars.
High in SkyClan, a clever black tabby apprentice named Smokepaw discovers an ancient tunnel beneath the gorge. Hidden within are weathered stones carved with the names of forgotten leaders-and a prophecy no living cat remembers.
Then everything changes.
ShadowClan's leader is found dead under mysterious circumstances.
No cat knows who killed them.
Without warning, Pearfur becomes ShadowClan's new leader, taking the name Pearstar.
Almost immediately, ShadowClan begins changing. Cats disappear. Patrols cross borders without explanation. Warriors whisper that Pearstar is hearing voices from somewhere beneath the forest.
Soon prey begins vanishing from every territory.
The Whispering Stones awaken.
Cats begin suffering terrifying dreams, waking with strange claw marks that appeared overnight. Some warriors disappear entirely, while others return... different, as if something else is watching through their eyes.
StarClan falls silent.
As the forest edges toward war, Pikekit learns that the prophecy is not about a hero...
