Sigrun Eirsdóttir is halfway through marrying a man she never wanted when a dragon tears open the wedding hall and carries her north.
The dragon is Jorund Skallr, Jarl of Skeldfjord, who crossed half the North to find her and refuses to explain why.
Sigrun expects captivity, yet when they reach Skeldfjord, Jorund gives her an unlocked room, shows her the road home, and leaves her free to take it. She is almost ready to leave when the strange mark on her skin begins changing whenever he comes near.
The mark soon becomes impossible to dismiss. When Jorund is wounded, Sigrun feels his pain, and as the bond between them deepens, flashes of his anger, fear, and desire begin slipping into her own. The freedom he gives her should make walking away easier, but the more closely she is drawn to him, the more difficult that choice becomes.
What troubles her most is that Jorund seems far less surprised by the bond than she is. He knew who Sigrun was before he entered her wedding hall, and his journey south was never only about rescuing an unwilling bride.
Before she can force the truth from him, the man she was meant to marry comes north with black iron, old magic, and knowledge of Sigrun's blood that she has never possessed herself.
Whatever Jorund came looking for is tied to her, and understanding why may require trusting the one man who has given her every chance to leave-even as wanting him gives her more reason to stay.
