Meanwhile, Larkpaw is haunted by a dead she-cat who wants to resume her dark machinations with the help of the apprentice. Larkwing also joins them in the hope of finally finding answers to the disappearance of her foster mother. Soon the cats of the reconnaissance patrol have to travel to a distant area beyond the Clans in order to find important clues. But the things they discover there leave them speechless. Not only are they confronted with the truth about the origin of the Shadowless, but also that the world outside the Clan territories harbours a tragic secret.
