Shots fired into the sky by a headmaster who tried in vain to calm the fight brought down several birds, which fell on a pupil, further increasing the general panic. The latter, as a consolation, also took a sweep to the head by a teacher whose sole role was to pick up the birds' corpses. When William arrived on the scene, only one question came to mind.
